Are you the sort of person who constantly feels defeated before you even begin? Is your sense of overwhelm crushing you, is it all too hard? If you are deep into the despair zone and think you have too many bad habits to break, if you feel silly even to change one little thing because – what difference would that make when you need to change so much? If this is you, then read on, as I will reassure you that ONE LITTLE change is all it takes! Sounds too good to be true? Have you heard about THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT? No I’m not talking about the Hollywood movie, I’m talking about the theory that TINY changes can hugely impact or alter events in the long run. When I first read about this, it made so much sense to me and filled me with a big sense of relief. Because there is no need to stress about ALL the changes you need to achieve a healthy mindset; all you need to do is take the first step.
I thought YES OF COURSE this is true! One little droplet of water doesn’t amount to much, but if it continues dripping for a few days, you have a whole bucket full of water. That bucket of water can keep a plant alive, it can be used to clean a whole floor, wash a baby, soak some dirty socks or a myriad of other uses. It all started with just ONE DROP. So how can you apply The Butterfly Effect in your own life?
Start within yourself, start by saying YES I AM TAKING A STEP TOWARDS A HEALTHIER LIFESTYLE TODAY. Repeat that thought every single morning. Simply by powering yourself up with a positive, proactive mindset, you will make some better choices that day, and every day. Give it a try. It will become your mantra that will help you make better decisions. For example, if you are feeling thirsty while running around doing errands and find yourself looking to buy a drink, remind yourself of your little mantra and choose a bottle of water rather than a soft drink. Healthier step achieved! It is as easy as that. You will feel happy about yourself that you accomplished one step towards healthier habits. Congratulations! Feeling happy about your healthier choice will lead you towards other healthier choices, because it feels better. Think about how you would feel while drinking that bad choice soft drink; It might have satisfied your craving right there and then, but afterwards the guilt hits and you feel low.
Every time you have a choice to make, take a few seconds; Is there a healthier choice to make? Can you take the stairs instead of the elevator? Can you pick a salad sandwich instead of a pie? Can you and your friend chat as you take a walk outside in the fresh air instead of sitting in a cafe? When you bring mindfulness into your choices and actions, you will be surprised how many little bad habits can easily be opted out for a better habit. Try it and see how you go. Every time you stop and make a better choice, smile and feel really good about yourself. Soon you will be smiling all day long.
After you have made that one switch from one bad habit to a better one, NEVER GO BACK. Stick with it. Every single time you stand in front of that exact choice, go for the better option. You will be surprised how quickly it becomes the new norm. You will start making that choice without thinking, it is now ingrained and easy to maintain.
So now you can see how The Butterfly Effect applies to everything we do. Actually by reading this blog post, you have already started something. Lets see where it leads!
